Summer of Cyclists is Upon us.

Bike Week takes place 8th-16thJune, so with the help of Cycling UK we’ve taken a look at the issue of safe overtaking of cyclists.

Although Bike Week is about promoting the benefits of cycling and encouraging more people to get on their bikes, research shows that over half (52%) of British adults are not aware of Highway Code advice for safely passing cyclists.

Despite the many personal, environmental and financial benefits to cycling, 62% of British adults consider cycling on the roads ‘too dangerous’. Keir Gallagher, Campaigns Officer at Cycling UK, said:

“Ensuring that every new driver learns to give cyclists a minimum of 1.5m when overtaking is key to making close passes a thing of the past.

Of course, the only thing better than virtual reality is the real deal – cycling is a free and easy way for learner drivers to build up their experience on the road and improve their interaction with vulnerable road users, and there’s no better time to get on the bike than during Bike Week, with hundreds of cycling events running nationwide.”

To support this initiative, Cycling UK have created an educational VR film, Too Close For Comfort, which gives an opportunity for drivers, old and new, to change perspectives and really understand how much space they should give when overtaking cyclists, and why this is so important.

“…most close passes come from a position of ignorance rather than malicious intent. Cycling UK has long argued that the driver training and testing processes should ensure that drivers are made aware of and understand both cyclists’ needs and their safety.

We at Compass take this initiative seriously and as such have always and continue to promote safe distance and awareness to all especially those that are more vulnerable on the roads. In short this should be continued and promoted well after this awareness week and we are committed to strive to continually improve the standards of our pupils for when they are fit and ready to be become fully fledged road users. 

Forward planning and use of mirrors are paramount tools in ensuring the safety of not just you but others that share the roads with us.

Liam Adamson- Broomhouse

We are delighted to announce that Liam Adamson has today passed his test first time with minimal driver marks. It’s also our first pass with the new car. A great day all round. Saale Suurtee- Gorgie

Absolutely delighted to announce that Saale Suurtee today passed her driving test first time and with zero faults. This is an incredible achievement because as per DVSA national statistics this happens in only 1% of tests each year. What’s even more incredible is Scotland is not Saale’s native country, Saale is over studying and working from Estonia. Absolutely brilliant and thoroughly well deserved. Enjoy the new licence and all the opportunities it will no doubt bring your bit above all remember to stay safe out there. 

Robert Wilson- Edinburgh

A massive congratulations to Robert Wilson who today passed his test in Currie with only one driver mark. A brilliant drive saw Robert walk away with his new licence and all the new opportunities and chances to explore that it brings. Well done again Robert, your hard work and dogged determination especially with everything that has been going on with you has paid off. Eden Clarke- Saughton

We are delighted to announce that Eden Clarke today passed her test with flying colours first time. Eden has been working so hard at getting her licence and managed to achieve this with a brilliant drive. A special mention as well to her instructor Laura Jackson who maintains her phenomenal record. Kerry Dickson- Drylaw

We are delighted to announce that Kerry Dickson from Drylaw, Edinburgh, today passed her test first time in Currie with only 3 driver marks. A nervous Kerry produced the best drive of her life to bring it home and open new possibilities for her and her family. Michael Stam- Bruntsfield

We are delighted to announce that Michael Stam from Bruntsfield, Edinburgh, today passed his test first time in Currie with minimum driver marks. A brilliantly composed drive saw Michael walk away with his new licence and the door to new opportunities wide open now. Charlotte Gray Renfrew- Bruntsfield

We are delighted to announce that Charlotte passed her test today first time with only 2 driver marks. Charlotte produced a great overall drive that impressed her examiner.
